Monitor Calibration

Here is a checklist of 12 simple steps to ensuring your monitor is calibrated correctly so that what you see is what you get:

Check your screen resolution. Choose the highest resolution available unless the text is too small. If you are using an LCD monitor, check the manual or box for the "native" resolution. Set your computer to this resolution.

Verify that your monitor is in high color or 24-bit mode. Check this by right clicking on your desktop and choosing Graphic Properties. If your display is in 16-bit color, there won't be enough color depth for the calibration process.

Let your monitor warm up for at least 15 (preferably 30) minutes before beginning the calibration.

Make sure that no reflections, glare or strong, direct light reaches your screen. The room doesn't have to be dark, but surrounding light shouldn't interfere with how you see what's on the screen.

Print a test photo on a professional quality printer. Choose a daylight photo with a person who has natural skin tone and print it using the highest quality settings and top-quality glossy photo paper. Let it dry away from direct sunlight for a few hours so that the colors can set permanently.

Adjust your contrast and brightness controls. They are located either on the front of your monitor in an on screen menu. Find a calibration test screen online by conducting a search. A free basic calibration tool can be found here.

Open the image file that you just printed.

Place the printed photo right next to the original image on the screen and compare.

Adjust the brightness, contrast, and color levels (red, green, blue) on your monitor until the image on the screen resembles the printed photo as closely as possible. This takes time and a good eye for color. Continue to the next step if you'd like to use software to calibrate your monitor.

Use basic software such as Adobe Gamma (if you have Adobe Photoshop 7 or below installed), QuickGamma (which is free), Apple ColorSync, or Monica for Linux to calibrate your monitor. To access Adobe Gamma, click "Start," "Settings" and "Control Panel." For all the software, follow the step by step instructions to perform the calibration. These will provide a basic calibration for, say, casual Photoshop users who don't print a lot of photographs.

Purchase specialized software used in conjunction with a colorimeter (a device that reads the actual color values produced by your monitor) if color accuracy is vital to your profession. Some calibration systems worth looking into are ColorVision Spyder 3 Pro, the ColorVision Color Plus (great for home systems), Monaco Systems MonacoOPTIX, and Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Display.

Calibrate your monitor every 2 to 4 weeks for optimum visual accuracy.

Important notes:

If you are running Windows Vista you will lose your ICC/ICM profile information during log off and if UAC (User Account Control) is activated and during a number of other Vista function due to the "Vista Gamma Table" bug [Not addressed in SP2]. http://neosmart.net/blog/2007/windows-vistas-gamma-table-bug/

If you have more than one calibrating program on your computer, make sure that only one is running at a time or else there could be conflicts.

Only use test prints made on true photographic paper from a commercial photo lab for monitor calibration. It is foolish to spend time calibrating you monitor when it is your printer that needs the adjustment. More often it is the printer that needs to be calibrated not the monitor. Do not trust the prints that you make yourself on your own printer. Each brand of printer will give different color results. So will different brands of printing paper in the same printer.

Original post

Backup your Outlook account settings!

We got tired of waiting for Microsoft to introduce an "Account Settings Export Wizard" or some other form of utility to backup your actual email accounts and not just your emails... So, we went ahead and did some research to find a solution, and to our astonishment, it's a lot easier than we imagined.... In fact it would take you less time and effort than reading this article! So here it is:

I trust you are aware of how to export a registry key using regedit.exe. Well, that's all you really need to know how to do.

Find the following registry key using regedit:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles

Export it and save it to a removable drive or device and simply double click it to restore your account settings, isn't that too simple?

Well, there is something else...you will have to enter the passwords for each account manually...I know, I know, it did sound too good to be true, however, I rather enter a few passwords than have to re-create all the accounts one by one!

If this advice helps you or you have any other suggestions please share them below.

Original post

Dexpot 1.5 turns your monitor into up to 20. Dexpot creates additional workspaces you can quickly switch between. Take, for example, Desktop 1 to listen to your favourite music, surf the web on Desktop 2, use Desktop 3 to handle your daily word processing or switch to Desktop 4 for a game of Solitaire.

Different icons, wallpapers, start-ups, and much more can be configured for each desktop.

Users owning netbooks, tablets and UMPC with small screens and low resolutions will benefit from virtual desktops as well.

But, the feature we love best is the ability to make any window transparent at the click of a mouse!

Checkout Dexpot at http://www.dexpot.de or you can download it from CNET.

Original post

We will be stopping our monthly recommendations of free software, this is primarily due to the lack of requests and absence of new and useful software for us to test. To clarify; we will continue to post about any new software we happen to test however, there will be no regular monthly recommendation. Instead we will post it soon after we've tested any new software. We may also include hardware and other peripherals or electronic devices in future posts.
SyncToy 2.1

SyncToy 2.1 is a free application that synchronizes files and folders between locations. Typical uses include sharing files, such as photos, with other computers and creating backup copies of files and folders.

There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.

Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.

Download SyncToy 2.1

Original post

This entire BP issue has gone too far!

I ran across this paragraph at the bottom of a news article that was posted online today, it's really disturbing and absolutely disgusting to think that we (our government) allow such irresponsible and negligent behavior to take place in response to what has already been classified as the worst man-made disaster of this century.

“The newest type of BP lawsuit is a class action filed last week over BP’s use of Corexit, a dispersent so toxic it was banned in the U.K. in 1998 as harmful to the food chain. Worried about Corexit’s toxicity, the U.S. EPA ordered BP to use less of it and switch to alternatives. The lawsuit calls Corexit four times more toxic than the oil itself, and it charges that BP’s use of over a million gallons and counting has made the toxin a permanent part of the Gulf seabed and food chain.”

Read the rest of the article at: http://financenews.freshcontentengine.com/bp-oil-spill-update-anadarko-turns-on-bp-is-20-billion-enough/

In my opinion it's about time our government did what they should have done when this all started, shutdown BP, fine them, sue them, hang them and take action to clean up and correct this issue themselves! Why would you trust the people that caused the mess to get us out of it? That's kind of like asking a demolition man to construct your home... On the other hand I imagine our Navy and Military are far more resourceful and would do better for us taking care of this issue rather than a greedy corporation that has only their own financial interest in mind.

Original post

Well, in all consideration, if you've been following the matches you'll most likely agree, everything else can wait till next month, this is the only thing that matters for now! And with Italy (the defending champs) out of the games and competitors like Ghana, Korea, Slovakia and Japan going through it really entices us to wonder if we can make it, how much longer can USA hold on? I doubt they will make it much further yet, what a remarkable surprise so far.
